Germany: Bell for peak cases if the measures are relaxed

German health experts warned today that further easing of restrictive measures as the number of cases skyrocketed again, increasing the likelihood of infections peaking to December levels by mid-April.

In the meantime, it is possible, under certain conditions, to complete the vaccination of all adults in mid-August in Germany, writes the magazine The mirror, citing research by the Central Institute of the Union of Insurance Funds.

The government plans to vaccinate about 330,000 people a day by the end of March. With the addition of mobile vaccination teams, the number of vaccinations could reach 550,000 a day, according to the research.

In addition, about four times more vaccines are expected to arrive in Germany from April than in the first three months of the year. Vaccinations could then, the Institute estimates, exceed 800,000 a day.

According to the authors of the study, the rate of vaccination will increase when about 70,000 private doctors are involved in the process, who will have more flexibility in terms of the priority of vaccinations. If about 20,000 vaccinations are given in 50,000 clinics a day, the total yield could soon reach one million doses a day and within 80 days – in theory – all those interested in the country could have been vaccinated.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeatedly stated that by September 21 at the latest, all citizens in Germany will have access to a vaccine for the new coronavirus.

3% of the population has been vaccinated

3% of the total population of Germany has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus, according to data released today by the Robert Koch Institute.

As noted, the two doses of the vaccine have already been received by about 2.5 million people, while 5.2 million people have received at least one dose. Overall, at least one vaccine dose has been given to 6.2% of the population.

Nursing home inmates account for almost half of pandemic victims

In the meantime, nursing home care has been almost half of the victims of the new coronavirus pandemic in Germany since it broke out, according to figures released by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

According to the newspaper, citing a survey by the state Ministries of Health and Social Affairs, of a total of 71,804 people who succumbed to complications from Covid-19, at least 29,000 were housed in nursing homes.

The percentage varies considerably from state to state: in Hamburg 60% of coronavirus victims lived in nursing homes, 54% in Bavaria, but 25% in Saxony and 29% in Saxony-Anhalt.

The newspaper points out that the data fully justify the priority given to the elderly in terms of vaccination, but emphasizes the long delays that are observed and speaks of an urgent need to restructure the model.
