Significant increases in the price of fuel at petrol stations are expected from tomorrow, as the three-month tax discount period for petrol and diesel expires at midnight. The validity of the single national ticket of 9 euros/month also expires tonight.
“I think initially we will see a fairly large price increase, but during the day and in the coming days, when the competition kicks in, it will be reduced,” said BFT Independent Fuel Stations Association president Duraid El Obeid.
From September 1, the old tax rates will apply again and, including VAT, the price of E10 petrol will increase by 35 cents/litre and diesel by 17 cents/litre.
At the same time, the government is looking at how to replace the €9 ticket for public transport, which has been bought by at least 38 million passengers across Germany in the past three months. The measure cost the state 2.5 billion euros and is believed to have helped curb inflation and save energy.
However, as far as the measure that will succeed it is concerned, there is still no clear picture. Today Finance Minister Christian Lindner gave the “green light” for a new type of ticket, but referred the matter to the state governments and is awaiting their proposals.
“The transport minister (Volker Wissing) convinced me. Now it’s the states’ turn. When we clear up the funding issue, the price can be fixed. But by buying so many tickets, the people voted that something has to be done,” said Mr. Lindner at DLF German Radio.
Indicatively, however, the city of Berlin is considering the possibility of continuing with the ticket at 9 euros, for movements however only within the state.
