In favor of the abolition of the obligatory celibacy of its clergy Of the Catholic Church was ordered Bishop of Munich, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, after the recent revelations about hundreds of cases of sexual abuse of minors in church institutions in the area.
“It would be better for some priests if they were married. I do not believe that the situation can continue as it is today. “But if this should concern every priest, I put a question mark there,” he said Cardinal in Swedish newspaper and clarified that the determining factor is not the sexual reasons, but the fact that it would be better for the lives of the priests not to be alone.
It is the first time that Cardinal Marx is so clear on the subject, as in 2019 he was still of the opinion that some restrictions on celibacy might be applied only in remote areas with a lack of priests.
In his last interview, however, Cardinal describes the priestly way of life as “unsafe” and states that he constantly tells the young clergy that it is not easy to live alone. He clarifies, however, that he does not see any general link between loneliness and sexual abuse, but acknowledges that this lifestyle and this “male society” also attract people who are not suitable or who are sexually immature.
THE Cardinal However, he expressed reservations about the possibility that women priests could be ordained. “The arguments against such a decision are becoming weaker and weaker,” he acknowledged, but stressed that a lot of consensus would be needed, otherwise the whole edifice is in danger.
