A former British embassy official in Berlin who is accused of passing documents to Russian secret services may be extradited to Britain, German authorities announced today.
Prosecutors in the state of Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin, have confirmed that an extradition request has been made.
The man, a British national named only under David S. under German privacy conventions, was arrested in August on suspicion of providing information to Russian secret services in exchange for cash from at least November 2020.
He worked as a local official at the British embassy until his arrest, which was the result of a joint investigation by German and British authorities.
The man, according to Der Spiegel magazine, citing his lawyer, does not want to return to the United Kingdom under any circumstances.
The arrest of the British David S. was announced by the German prosecutor’s office on August 11. Police searched the suspect’s home and workplace.
On the night of August 11, the Briton was taken into custody by a court decision. At that time, the Russian embassy in Berlin, as reported by TASS, had stated that “it does not have any official information that it has received from the German side.” In turn, the Russian ambassador to Britain, Andrei Kelin, told TASS that the British government did not discuss with the Russian diplomatic mission in London the arrest of the British employee of the British embassy in Berlin.
An earlier statement from British police said the 57-year-old British man was arrested in Germany. According to British media reports, his name is David Smith, he worked as a security guard at the British Embassy in Berlin and did not have diplomatic immunity. It was even reported that in the period 2007 – 2015 he had worked as a dog trainer in the British military guard in the city of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The British press speculates that David.S. was for a time under the surveillance of the British MI-6 counterintelligence service.
