Germany: Bundestag chairman backs Schroeder’s resignation or removal from SPD

Bundestag President Bärbel Bas no longer sees a position for former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in the SPD because of his closeness to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. “It is a pity he does not question himself at all,” the SPD politician told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

“That’s why it makes sense for the SPD to say: either it decides to leave the party itself, or there will be a deletion process.” Bas, however, pointed out that it is very difficult to expel someone because of a particular opinion.

“It is clear that Gerhard Schroeder is not helping the SPD. On the contrary, it is doing harm,” Bas said. He added that everyone has learned so far about their relationship with Russia and their previous assessments. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, for example, apologized. “And I think Schröder also has to admit to himself that he misjudged Putin.”

He had no explanation for his insistence. “It destroys the image of his chancellery, which has had many positive things for Germany. And it hurts itself as an individual,” Bas said. “It is therefore consistent that the party president calls on him to leave the party.”
