Germany-Bundeswehr association president: German army has ‘huge problems’

In response to the crisis in Ukraine, the president of the Bundeswehr Union, André Wüstner, called for an immediate program to improve the equipment of the troops and further increase the defense budget.

“Waiting is not even the second best choice,” Wüstner told ZDF Morgenmagazin on Saturday.

“We have huge problems in the areas of ammunition, vehicles, ships, aircraft and spare parts.”

Politicians must now “finally wake up”. This applies not only to the strategic reorientation of Russian policy, but also to the formation of the Bundeswehr.

Military inspector Alfons Mais sounded the alarm on Thursday over Bundeswehr equipment. In his 41st year in peacetime, he did not think he should live another war. “And Bundeswehr, the army I am allowed to lead, is more or less empty,” he said.

As for Ukraine’s demands for German weapons and military equipment, Wüstner said the Bundeswehr itself was at the limits of its capabilities and supplies. “We can not provide what we do not have alone,” he said.
