Germany calls on Armenia and Azerbaijan to resume peace talks

The continuation of the peace negotiations of its governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the participation of the European Union, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier requested.

“We need a solution that will restore peace”Mr. Steinmeier emphasized during his talks with his two counterparts yesterday, noted his spokeswoman, Kerstin Gamelin.

He urged the parties to resume tripartite negotiations mediated by European Council President Charles Michel, Ms Gamelin added via Twitter.

In the discussions of its presidents GermanyArmenia and Azerbaijan, developments in Europe, Ukraine and the South Caucasus region were also discussed.

Diplomats believe that Azerbaijan’s authoritarian government has decided to seize the opportunity presented to it by the fact that Armenia’s patron power, Russia, is focusing its attention on the war in Ukraine.
