Politicians from the CDU and CSU have called on Chancellor Olaf Solz (SPD) to travel to Ukraine as well as other Western politicians, according to Handelsblatt.
“I would like our chancellor to follow this example and see for himself on the ground,” Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU), chairman of the CDU / CSU in the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee, told Handelsblatt. “Germany must fulfill its important role as a hinge in Europe and take the lead in supporting Ukraine, managing the crisis and taking the necessary measures that we hope will lead to an end to the war.”
CSU MP Volker Ullrich also sees the ball in the German government’s court. “Now more than ever it would be an important sign that the top representative of the German government, Olaf Solz, would also be traveling to Ukraine,” Ulrich wrote on Twitter.
With British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Foreign Affairs Commissioner Josep Borrell and Austrian Chancellor Carl Nehammer, four top Western politicians had traveled to Kyiv in recent days.
In the SPD, Soltz’s visit to Ukraine is not considered absolutely necessary. In an interview with Handelsblatt, SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich referred to Germany’s solidarity with Ukraine. “However, this is not decided by the images, but by the practice.”
Scholz himself took part in an SPD election campaign on Saturday in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, where the state’s new parliament will be elected on May 8. In a speech, he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of imperialist thinking “as we know it from the 19th, 18th, 17th and other centuries.”
