Germany: Charité cancels all regular surgeries due to coronavirus overload

The Charité University Hospital in Berlin announced today that it is postponing all scheduled surgeries due to its burden on patients with Covid-19.

According to the hospital management, the ever-increasing number of patients treated with Covid-19 makes this step necessary in order to move staff from other clinics to the coronavirus wards. From now on and for as long as needed, only emergencies will be served.

At the moment, according to the Athens News Agency, more than 120 patients with coronavirus. Of these, 50 are in the Intensive Care Unit. There are 470 cases of coronavirus being treated throughout Berlin, 130 of them in the ICU.

On its Board of Directors German University Hospital had already warned last month of the danger that regular surgeries could not be serviced, noting the lack of staff, as many, under pressure from the situation, are either on sick leave or have changed jobs.
