At least 42 children aged 5 to 11 in Hanover were accidentally vaccinated against Covid-19 at a higher adult dose. Experts, however, reassure, emphasizing that no serious side effects are expected.
As the head of the Health Service of Hanover Marlene Graf stated last night, possible side effects are local reactions and fever. “From a medical point of view, it was an overdose, which, however, is not expected to have any negative consequences,” Ms. Graf assured, adding that the parents of these children have already been informed by the regional administration by phone and e-mail.
However, Regional President Stephen Krach stressed that such a mistake should not have happened, even if it does not have serious side effects for children’s health. “It will not be repeated under any circumstances. But all procedures must be re-examined in order to identify how the error occurred,” Mr Krach said.
Children 5 to 11 years of age normally receive one-third of the normal dose of the vaccine.
In December, three children under the age of 12 in North Rhine-Westphalia were accidentally vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine, and the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine has only been given emergency use for this age group.
