Germany: Christian Union (CDU / CSU) to support Steinmeier’s re-election as Federal President

Following the ruling coalition parties (SPD, Greens, FDP), the Christian Union (CDU / CSU) announced today that it would support the re-election of Frank-Walter Steinmeier as Federal President.

The outgoing President of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU), Armin Lasset, and the Leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Markus Zender, announced their decision a few hours ago. Yesterday, Tuesday, the Greens announced their intention, while the SPD and the FDP had been placed in the previous days. It is now considered certain that on February 13, the 66-year-old Social Democrat (SPD) former Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will renew his term at the Bellevue presidential palace.

In the pandemic debate, which has divided the country in many ways, “we are experiencing social centrifugal forces,” Lassett said, stressing the need for a credible voice of the head of state that will unite people and different views”. Mr Steinmeier “has a high level of domestic recognition policy and excellent foreign policy skills,” he added. To date, however, the Christian Union parties have left open the possibility of nominating another candidate for the position, most likely a woman.

The Federal Assembly, which consists of the 736 members of the Federal Parliament and as many electors nominated by the 16 state parliaments, will vote on the election of the Federal President on 13 February. With the support of five of the seven Bundestag parties, Mr Steinmeier’s candidacy theoretically garnered 1,222 votes out of a total of 1,472.
