Nearly 250,000 people demonstrated today in Cologne, where the traditional carnival parade turned into an anti-war mobilization for Ukraine, according to organizers and police.
This demonstration was organized in replacement of the “traditional” parade of Rhodes Monday, which marks the culmination of the Carnival in Germany and was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The organizers spoke of “more than 250,000 participants”. Many of them wore uniforms in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. “Make love, not war”, “Stop Putin” and “No to war” were some of the slogans on the banners held by the crowd.
Many carnival chariots also bore the image of Russian President Vladimir Putin. One depicted him as a caricature, with a hammer in his hand and the caption “The old, good times” – a reference to the regime of the Soviet Union.
In another chariot, a dove, pierced by the Russian flag, was bleeding.
Protesters observed a minute’s silence to send “a strong message” against the fighting in Ukraine.
Over the weekend, hundreds of thousands of people protested against the war in many cities around the world.
