Germany considers ending Telegram over hate speech and fake news

The spread of hate speech against minority groups and fake news related to the effectiveness of vaccines could be responsible for the end of Telegram activities in Germany, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in comments published on Wednesday (12).

According to the official, Germany could shut down Telegram if the messaging service popular with far-right groups and people who oppose pandemic-related restrictions continues to violate German law.

“We can’t rule it out,” she told the German outlet Die Zeit. “A shutdown would be serious and clearly a last resort. All other options must be exhausted first.”

She added that Germany was discussing with its partners in the European Union how to regulate Telegram.

record of cases

On Wednesday, Germany broke a new record for coronavirus cases, spurred on by the potential for the Omicron variant to spread.

There were 80,430 people infected in the country in 24 hours, the highest number recorded in a single day since the beginning of the pandemic.

The previous daily record, on November 26 last year, was more than 76,000 people infected.

In Germany, just under 75% of the population has taken at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Robert Koch Health Institute.
