The head of the Federal Forensic Service, Holger Munch, talks about criminal acts against Russians and Ukrainians in Germany since the outbreak of the war.
Two hundred attacks a week against Russians and Ukrainians living in Germany have been recorded by the Federal Criminal Service (Bundeskriminalamt) since the outbreak of war in Ukraine. This information was mentioned in an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper in Berlin by the head of the German service Holger Munch.
As for the nature of the recorded criminal acts, Munch speaks of “threats, insults and damage to foreign property.” Crime figures show a “steady to slightly declining trend” in recent weeks.
“But it is difficult to predict developments because they depend on the course of the war,” Münch said. Until then, however, the German Forensic Service remained on alert “recording and evaluating all relevant information from the German states and the competent services”.
Hate speech on social media
However, the work of the Federal Forensic Service seems to be more difficult when it comes to hate speech and criminal acts committed on the internet and specifically on social media.
According to Münch, at least “individual hate posts against people from the Russian and Ukrainian communities in Germany” have been officially recorded so far, but the number is not indicative. However, companies such as Facebook or Google are now required by law to report to the Criminal Service information that may be linked to suspicious criminal content – in this case related to the war in Ukraine.
According to the German Statistics Service, by the end of 2020, more than 235,000 people of Russian descent and almost 135,000 Ukrainians were living in Germany, a number that could increase due to the war in Ukraine.
