Germany: Danger of episodes for capitulation anniversary events after World War II

“Sensitive situation of danger” is caused, according to the Berlin police, by the ongoing war in Ukraine on tomorrow’s anniversary of its capitulation Germany in World War II.

More than 3,400 police officers will be at the scene tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, as there is an estimated risk of tensions. Police have banned the display of symbols such as Russian and Ukrainian flags or the Ribbon of the Order of St. George, military uniforms, etc., but also the rejection of raids, national anthems and slogans in favor of war in the memorials and monuments of this anniversary. Only War Veterans, who can come in wearing their uniforms, are excluded from the regulation.

The decision by the authorities angered the Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin, Andriy Melnik, who tweeted to the mayor of the city, Francesca Gifai, asking for the “scandalous decision” to be revoked “regarding the ban on the appearance and the Ukrainian flag. The diplomat, who has repeatedly criticized German politicians, also said he was “shocked” and spoke of a “slap in the face to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.”

“We are protecting the dignified celebration at 15 monuments in the city, with the aim of avoiding any conflict in these locations. “At the same time, we are taking action against any form of support, approval or praise for Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine,” said Berlin Police Chief Barbara Slovik.

Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow thousands of people are expected to be at the historic monuments of Berlin for the end of World War II. The act of remembering and respecting these monuments must be preserved in the context of the Russian war in Ukraine. “War must not be allowed to break out beyond democratic discourse and in conflicts or arguments in Berlin,” a police statement said.
