Clashes broke out between protesters and police at a climate protest in Hamburg, a major German port, yesterday Saturday.
According to the police, protesters who had blocked the Katwick Bridge attacked officers using pepper spray. Police responded by using pepper spray, batons and pressurized water cannons to disperse the crowd.
A representative of the organizers of the demonstration described the incidents as “a new peak of police brutality”.
Activists also blocked the Kelbrandt Bridge and, among other things, rails used by the Hamburg Port Authority.
“We blocked a central hub of German foreign trade to draw attention to the consequences of modern colonialism,” said a statement from the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion.
Five marches were announced yesterday in Hamburg. In the first major mobilization, about 2,000 people marched from Altona Park to a nearby train station.
