Facebook was ordered to stop collecting data from German users on the WhatsApp app after the country’s regulator said the company’s attempt to force users to agree to the updated terms of use was illegal.
Johannes Kaspar, head of the Hamburg Privacy Office, has issued a three-month emergency ban on data collection. He also asked the European Union’s group of data regulators to take action and issue a regulation across the block from 27 countries. According to him, the new WhatsApp terms are illegal as they are opaque and inconsistent.
The order aims to protect the rights and freedoms of millions of users who agree to the terms of WhatsApp across Germany. We must prevent damage and disadvantages associated with such a procedure.

Facebook’s WhatsApp unit called Kaspar’s claims “wrong” and said the order would not stop the implementation of the new rules. The company said the regulator’s actions were “based on a fundamental misunderstanding” of the purpose and implications of the upgrade.
The new terms of use for WhatsApp are set to take effect on May 15th.
