Germany: Energy cooperation agreement with Qatar signed by German government – Emir Al Thani-Solz meeting

An agreement on energy cooperation with Qatar for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen was signed today by the German government, as part of its effort to break free from Russian gas.

“Qatar has enormous potential for renewable energy, especially in the production of ‘green hydrogen’, and the federal government is interested in exploiting it,” Chancellor Olaf Soltz told a news conference with Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad al-Hamid. Thani. LNG supply will start in 2024. “We want the US Golden Pass liquefied natural gas plant in Texas, in which Qatar Energy holds 70%, to be ready by 2024 so that we can deliver to Germany,” he said earlier. Qatari Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told Handelsblatt that an additional volume of gas would be added later. “Production expansion at the North Dome gas field will be completed in 2026, possibly as early as 2025,” he said. The North Dome is the largest gas field in the world, shared by Qatar and Iran in the Persian Gulf. By 2026 at the latest, Qatar’s gas production will increase from the current 77 to 126 million tonnes of LNG. Asked about the exact amount to be allocated to Europe, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said he was not an expert, but vowed that his country would “offer what it can for energy security” in Europe.

Chancellor Soltz also said that the two countries look forward to strengthening their cooperation in areas such as high technology, while he said that Foreign Minister Analena Berbok and her Qatari counterpart will work closely together in the future. He praised the role of the Gulf state in mediating between the West and the Taliban.

The German Ministry of Economy announced today the establishment of two working groups. The first, on LNG and hydrogen, will promote trade relations in the sector and create a forum for discussion on infrastructure and regulatory issues. The second group, on renewable energy, energy efficiency and cargo management, will focus on developing renewable energy capabilities and related issues, such as infrastructure and electricity markets. In addition, the dialogue on energy efficiency solutions should be promoted, which “can contribute to the elimination of exhaust emissions in buildings, transport and industry,” the Ministry of Economy points out.

During the press conference at the Chancellery, the Emir of Qatar was also asked if in the context of the Football World Cup, which his country will host this year, German homosexuals are also welcome, to answer: “Everyone is welcome in N. We stop anyone with a different background or perception from coming to Doha, Qatar is a very hospitable country, millions of people visit our country, the World Cup is a great opportunity for people from different parts of the world to come and experience and understand it. “We want them to come for football but also for our culture. We all live on a planet, but each of us has a different culture. We welcome them all. We respect other cultures and we want people to respect ours.” Asked if the Qatari national team would boycott the event due to discrimination in Qatar, Soltz dismissed the case, while avoiding direct criticism of the Qatari government: “We will also discuss human rights issues. and civil rights, “he said, noting that improvements have been made to labor rights, but of course” there is always room for improvement. ”
