Germany extends aid package for energy-intensive businesses

Germany’s economy ministry said today it is extending the deadline for a 5 billion euro aid package for energy-intensive businesses and finalizing details of a program intended to help them deal with soaring electricity costs, Reuters reported.

Companies can apply until the end of September for subsidies of up to 50 million euros for increased gas and electricity costs, the ministry said. The previous deadline was the end of August.

The announcement said that Germany is working with the European Commission to extend the program period.

More than 200 businesses, mostly medium-sized, have sent about 1,000 applications since the program began in mid-July, the ministry said, adding that the first tranche of funding was disbursed in early August.
