The Federal Constitutional Court has upheld the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has filed a lawsuit accusing former Chancellor Angela Merkel of discriminating against the party when, while on an official trip abroad, harshly criticized him. had asked not to join the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) in a coalition government with the AfD in Thuringia.
Following the state elections in Thuringia in 2020, which the AfD won, a serious political crisis erupted when, with the votes of the CDU, AfD and the Liberals (FDP), the liberal Thomas Kemerich was elected Prime Minister. During a press conference with South African President Cyril Ramafoza, Merkel called it a “bad day for democracy” and called her party’s stance unforgivable. The AfD has appealed to the Constitutional Court, accusing the chancellor of discrimination against her, and today Vice-President of the Court Doris Koenig stated that “it was not clear that Mrs Merkel did not want to speak as chancellor but as a party politician” and therefore her statement, “which contains negative references to the AfD, is a violation of the right of equal opportunities between the parties.”
A spokesman for the former chancellor said today that “Angela Merkel certainly respects the decision of the Court”, without, however, referring to the substance of the matter.
