Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier earlier this evening approved the timetable decided jointly by the parliamentary groups of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Greens and the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) for early elections on 23 February 2025 in Germany. “According to the current assessment, the federal president considers February 23, 2025 as a realistic date for elections,” the presidential office said in a statement after the meeting with Mr. Steinmeier with the heads of K.O. Rolf Mützenich (SPD), Friedrich Merz (CDU/CSU) and Britta Hasselmann and Katarina Drogues (Greens). The German Constitution provides that the federal president has the power to dissolve parliament and call elections. Source: RES
