Germany: Fierce criticism of the luxury wedding of the finance minister – “An orgy of neo-enrichment”

Strong reactions and unfavorable comments have been caused by Marriage of German Finance Minister Christian Lindner and politics reporter of WELT TV Franka Lefeld, mainly due to luxury options of the couple in the midst of war, energy and economic crisis.

The “Kristiankas”, as the German press refers to the couple, celebrated their civil wedding in a close circle last Thursday at the Museum of “island of the rich”Sylt, in the North Sea, exactly four years after they met.

This was followed on Saturday by the religious ceremony at the evangelical church of St. Severinus, also in Sylt. Among the dignitaries was the chancellor Olaf Solz and CDU leader Friedrich Merz, who was also the target of comments as he arrived on the island piloting his private jet. From the business world, the head of the Volkswagen Group, Herbert Diess, attended the wedding.

Media and social media users’ comments were mostly about the choice of a sports car Porsche Targa for the bride’s arrival at the church and the couple’s departure from it, the mobilization of hundreds of police officers for the security of the ceremonies and the blocking of roads during the three days, the choice of a particularly expensive and worldly restaurant for the reception, but also the fact that a religious marriage took place, although both Mr. Lindner and Mrs. Leffeld have long since officially left the German Evangelical Church, exempting themselves from the relevant financial contribution.

“The issue here was not the Christian content of the ceremony, but only the stage of a performance,” the former head of the Evangelical Church commented onof Germany Margot Kessman, who explained that a religious marriage takes place only if at least one of the couple is a member of the church. Special mention is also given by the media to the ensembles worn by Ms. Lefeld at the two ceremonies, total value 13,000 euros.

“In such difficult times an orgy of neo-enrichment,” comments Stern magazine, while Nordkurier writes “Christian Lindner’s decadent marriage – the bill, please.” Ethics professor Matthias Wirth described the wedding in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger as a “minimally socially and morally sensitive event by a minister who now wants to cut benefits for the long-term unemployed”. “This photo (in the Porsche) will follow him,” writes Focus magazine. On Twitter, many users paralleled the behavior of Christian Lindner with that of outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

When asked about this, the representative of the Ministry of Finance, Nadine Calvey, limited herself to stating that it was a private event of the minister.
