According to German media, a swastika had been painted on the door of the hotel.

“I’m shocked at what appears to have happened here,” said police inspector Michael Peters. “Any attack against refugees constitutes an attack against our values,” he stressed.

The fire in the run-down eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was near the site where in August 1992 hundreds of far-right extremists launched Germany’s worst attacks on migrants.
