Germany: Foreign Minister Alena Berbok to visit Ukraine and Russia next week

German Foreign Minister Alena Berbock will be in Kiev on Monday and then in Moscow to discuss various issues, including the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a ministry spokeswoman said at a news conference.

The Russian government announced yesterday, Thursday, that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet for the first time face to face with Burbok next Tuesday.

Earlier this month, Burbok stressed the need for a dialogue with Moscow to de-escalate tensions between Russia and Ukraine. However, Russia described this week’s talks with Western powers as “disappointing”.

Berlin nevertheless hopes that the talks will continue, a German government spokesman said today.

Westerners have accused Russia of gathering about 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine in recent weeks to prepare for an attack on the country, a claim Moscow denies.

Moscow, for its part, is seeking assurances from the West that it will stop the expansion of NATO’s military alliance on its borders, mainly in Ukraine.

These tensions could affect the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline connecting Russia to Germany, which Ukraine opposes.

The United States and German government environmentalists say the pipeline, which has not yet been put into operation, should be sanctioned if Russian troops invade Ukraine.

The German Social Democrats, for their part, believe that the pipeline, a “private” project, should be left out of the Ukrainian dossier.
