Germany: Fruits and vegetables are becoming a luxury item for the poor

“Due to price increases, the fruit and vegetables are becoming a definite luxury item for the poor, as they can no longer afford them. The Hartz IV social allowance provides only five euros per day for feeding. These were not enough for a balanced diet, as studies have shown. The fact that the social allowance is now rising by three ridiculous euros confirms that the government is ignoring the vital needs of people living on basic social assistance“, Said the president of the Social Union (VdK), Verena Bendele in the newspaper” Tagesspiegel “.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, food prices have risen to Germany by 4.6% in August compared to the same month last year, while vegetable prices rose by 9%. Green salad has become almost 40% more expensive.

The German Diabetes Association (DDG) and the German Non-Communicable Disease Alliance (DANK) are calling for a “healthy Value Added Tax”. Foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts should be exempt from VAT. On the other hand, unhealthy high-sugar products, such as soft drinks, should have a higher VAT rate of 29%.

«Families with a weak socio-economic background will benefit, as their access to fresh fruits and vegetables will be facilitated. “Healthy eating should not be considered a luxury,” said Barbara Beecher, CEO of DDG, as reported by the Athens News Agency.
