Germany: Germany is in a second stress test for energy supply

In a second stress test, the security of electricity supply in Germany will be tested under stricter conditions, according to Handelsblatt. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology gave this order to Germany’s four transmission system operators.

The aim is to establish whether the security of supply in the electricity sector and the safe operation of the grid are ensured under stricter conditions, the ministry announced in Berlin. Results are expected “in the coming weeks.”

A first stress test from March to May this year concluded that security of supply is guaranteed next winter – even in the event of a loss of Russian gas supplies, a very high gas price and if a large number of French nuclear of stations was not connected to the network at the same time.

Now even more serious scenarios must be calculated. “These include, for example, even higher price assumptions than in the first stress test, an even more severe loss of natural gas supplies and a greater loss of French nuclear plants,” the ministry explained.

In addition, the special situation in southern Germany should be taken into account. In Bavaria, there are gas-fired power plants, but few coal-fired power plants and also few wind farms, while the last nuclear plants will be closed at the end of 2022, it has been said.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck said that ensuring Germany’s security of supply is central to all energy policy decisions. “The fact is that we have a problem with natural gas, while with electricity it is a different story: Security of supply in the electricity sector is guaranteed even under the most stringent conditions, as the first endurance test shows. In order to further strengthen the precautionary measures, we have now launched a second stress test.It looks at even more extreme scenarios.
