Germany: Government does not favor keeping its nuclear power plants in operation

The German Ministries of Environment and Economy have stated that the costs and risks of maintaining nuclear power plants beyond pre-planned Russian-Ukrainian power plants outweigh the potential benefits.

“Weighing the benefits and risks, extending the lifespan of the three nuclear power plants is not recommended, even in the context of the current gas crisis,” the two ministries said in a joint statement.

In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany is tracking radical changes in its energy system to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, including keeping its nuclear power plants afloat.
