Germany: grieving swan blocks rail traffic

Several German trains, running on the high-speed line between Cassel and Göttingen, suffered a delay of about fifty minutes just before Christmas because of a swan blocking the track. And for good reason. The bird was in mourning. He had just lost his companion, probably killed after hitting an electric cable above the rails. The surviving swan did not want to leave him and sat down next to him. It took the intervention of firefighters to clear the way and restore traffic.

The two birds had lost their way on the high-speed line “during an excursion”, according to the press release from the Cassel police. The facts date back to December 23 but were made public on Monday December 28.

The surviving swan released on the Fulda river

The hapless swan resisted attempts by officials for nearly an hour to lure it away from the tracks. Firefighters with special equipment had to be called to the rescue: they managed to take the dead swan and its companion safe and sound out of the area. The rescued bird was then released on the Fulda River. Twenty-three trains had been delayed for about 50 minutes during the rescue operation.

According to the British Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, swans attempt to stay in pairs for their entire lives.
