The Ukrainian armed forces received 500 Strela anti-aircraft missiles from Germany last Thursday, the Welt am Sonntag revealed in its newspaper yesterday.
According to the German newspaper, the weapons were handed over by the German to the Ukrainian army on Polish territory.
A spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense limited himself to saying that due to “operational issues and security issues” it could not refer to specific weapons systems that were delivered. He noted, however, that a wide range of military equipment had already been delivered or would be delivered to the Ukrainian armed forces by the German.
More material will be delivered when possible, he added.
Initially there was talk of procuring 2,700 such missiles, but the issue needs to be addressed by the Federal Security Council.
The Soviet-designed Strela missiles were in the German stockpile after being inherited by the former GDR.
