More than 300,000 refugees have arrived in Germany from Ukraine since the Russian invasion began six weeks ago, according to Germany’s Interior Ministry.
On Thursday (7), the ministry said it had registered 316,453 refugees from Ukraine in the country. The actual number of refugees could be significantly higher due to the absence of border checks between Poland and Germany, an Interior Ministry spokesman told CNN.
Most refugees arriving in Germany are women, children and the elderly, the spokesperson added.
The UN estimates that more than four million Ukrainians had left the country fleeing the war by the end of March. The number means almost 10% of the country’s total population before the Russian invasion.
According to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the number of displaced people within Ukraine exceeds seven million people. According to the IOM, most families who leave their homes have children or elderly people in the family.
