Germany has made significant progress in reducing its exposure to Russian gas, oil and coal imports since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Friday.
He said Russian oil imports now accounted for 25% of German imports, from 35%, and gas imports fell to 40% from 55%. Russian coal imports fell to 25% from 50% before the invasion.
“The first major milestones to free us from the control of Russian imports have been achieved,” he said, adding that by the summer the share of Russian gas imports would fall to 24% and that by the summer of 2024 Germany could is almost independent of Russian gas.
