German Foreign Minister Analena Berbok has reaffirmed her support for a European Union embargo on Russian oil exports.
Germany, Ms Burbok told German public television network ARD, is now “ready” to cope without buying crude from Russia for several years.
New agreements on the supply of argon have greatly reduced Berlin’s dependence on Moscow for its supply of argon, the German Foreign Minister explained.
According to the German government, the share of Russian oil consumed in Germany fell from 35% to 12% in just a few weeks.
Following Germany’s “yes” to imposing an embargo on Russian oil, pressure is mounting on other EU member states, which have been criticized for being slow to reduce their dependence and consent.
At their extraordinary meeting in Brussels, the EU Energy Ministers (scheduled to start at 15:00 local time, ie at 16:00 Greek time), are expected to discuss, among other things, the imposition of an embargo on Russian oil.
