Germany increases humanitarian aid to Ukraine to avoid famine

Germany will increase humanitarian aid to Ukraine and neighboring states to more than €370 million (approximately €1.9 billion) and will provide a further €430 million (€2.2 billion) to combat a potential famine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday.

He urged other countries to offer more help during a press conference following a meeting with other leaders from the G7 and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“Russia’s war is dramatically impacting food supplies far beyond Ukraine. And that’s why we must do everything to prevent hunger,” Scholz said. “Europe is very supportive, but we need a global effort.”

In the same interview, the chancellor warned the Russian government against the use of chemical and biological weapons. “If Russia is preparing a false flag operation to use these types of weapons [químicas e biológicas] in Ukraine, that would be a violation of all rules, treaties and conventions,” he told reporters in Brussels.

“It is our concern not only to point this out, but also to warn in the conversations we have: ‘Don’t do this,’” he added.
