Germany: Inflation at 7.3% in March, for the first time since 1981

Inflation in Germany rose more than expected in March, as prices for gas and fossil fuels rose after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Consumer prices, harmonized by European standards, rose 7.6% year-on-year from a 5.5% rise in February, according to the statistical office.

The national consumer price index rose 7.3% year-on-year, following a 5.1% rise in February.

A similarly high inflation rate in Germany was last recorded in the autumn of 1981, when oil prices soared as a result of the Gulf War.

Analysts expected the inflation rate to reach 6.3% and the EU-harmonized price to 6.7%.
