Germany intends to equip itself with F-35

LAST UPDATE: 09:50

The German government intends to equip the country’s Air Force with US-made fifth-generation F-35 fighters, sources close to it told the German Agency today.

The Lockheed Martin aircraft, with technology that makes it somewhat invisible to radar, will be purchased to replace the Tornado fleet, which was put into service more than 40 years ago, the sources explained.

The government had announced that it would replace the Tornado by presenting its program targets in September.

According to the sources of the German Agency, Berlin plans to buy about 35 such fighters.

Last month, German Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Soltz announced that he would raise his country’s military spending, which he said would exceed 2% of GDP, the figure NATO had demanded, but for years Berlin chose not to spend. , as the conflict in Ukraine forced Germany to reconsider its foreign and defense policy.

The amount to be spent will exceed 100 billion euros, according to Mr. Solts.

The German government is also downplaying Paris’ concerns that the acquisition of the F-35s will hurt plans to build a next-generation European fighter, the so-called FCAS (Future Combat Air System).

In the case of the F-35, it was recently pointed out that other European German partners in NATO are already using the fighter, so there will be interoperability and the possibility of “synergies”.
