Health Minister Jens Spann and doctors at the Intensive Care Unit are calling for a tougher two- or three-week lockdown to “break” the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in Germany.
“This will save many lives and even more people from the long-term consequences of Covid-19,” said Gerno Marx, President of the German Interscientific Association of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI). “We are moving towards disaster with our eyes open,” Marx said, noting that, according to Union figures, there are now only 1,644 ICU beds available for patients with Covid-19, while the number of coronavirus patients in Units since March 10 has increased from 2,727 to 3,448.
“This number will continue to increase exponentially in the coming weeks, regardless of what we do now,” said DIVI medical-scientific director Christian Karagiannidis. “With more than 5,000 patients with Covid-19, things are slowly becoming very critical. “This means that something must be done now.”
His colleague Stephen Weber-Carstens even added that the citizens did not realize how borderline the situation was between Christmas and the beginning of January. Many coronavirus patients were flown from East and Central Germany to the north. Now, he noted, similar requests have begun to be recorded again.
