Interior Minister Nancy Fezer reaffirmed today that the German government is still opposed to a possible arms shipment to Ukraine, but remains prepared to deal with refugee flows.
“We do not approve of the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, nothing has changed in that,” Ms Fesser told German public television channel ZDF, when asked to comment on a new request from Kiev.
Regarding the possibility of refugee flows from Ukraine, the Minister of the Interior assured that Germany “is certainly ready and already prepared for what is to come now”, noting that the municipalities and communities have completed the preparation, for in case they need to welcome people in need of protection. The municipalities and communities have even expressed their willingness to help immediately after the start of the Russian invasion, Ms. Fezer added, but clarified that in the first phase, Ukraine’s neighboring countries will be supported in order to host people who will leave their country.
Referring to the danger of Russian cyber attacks, Nancy Fezer expressed the assessment that the main target will be Ukraine, but assured that Germany has also been shielded in any eventuality.
