Germany: Jens Spann predicts ‘sad climax’ at ICU at Christmas

The outgoing Health Minister Jens Spann once again called on the people to “take seriously the conditions” that prevail due to the pandemic, asking them to think about the situation in the Health system, the burden on which he estimated that the Christmas. “Help us avoid more pain,” he said characteristically, but was very cautious about the planned introduction of a vaccination obligation.

“Germany will significantly exceed the 5,000 ICU patients. If the measures take effect immediately, the situation at the ICU will reach its sad peak around Christmas. Even if the measures take effect immediately and are consistently followed, they became infected yesterday or the day before yesterday, next week or the following week they will end up in the Intensive Care Units “, warned Mr. Span, in his possibly last official appearance as Minister of Health.

For his part, the head of the Robert Koch Institute, referring to the stagnation of the number of new cases lately, stressed that it is too early to interpret it as a reversal of the trend, let alone as a reason to give up more stringent measures. On the contrary, he clarified, today there are 920,000 active cases in Germany, ie a little more than 1% of the population is currently infected with coronavirus, while the sub-reporting of cases is estimated at two or even three times.

As for the measures decided yesterday by the federation and the states for a general lockdown of the unvaccinated, Jens Spann admitted that “we should have already shown this consequence earlier, when dealing with people who have not been vaccinated”. “Even though it has now been shown that the incidence of cases among vaccinated people is increasing, the numbers among those who have not been vaccinated in all age groups are” much higher, “he added. “If all adult Germans were vaccinated, we would not be in this difficult situation. That is just the truth. Not being vaccinated is not a decision that only concerns oneself, but always has consequences for others,” he said. the caretaker Minister of Health, with a view to the compulsory vaccination being discussed by the new government. “I have a very cautious attitude towards a general vaccination obligation,” he said, adding, however, that “this will determine his vote” when the issue reaches the Bundestag. A relevant opinion from the Ethics and Ethics Council is expected by the end of the year, he pointed out. He clarified, he has already accepted the booster vaccine, while he advertises the vaccination in every way from the beginning.

The vaccination campaign, however, he noted, is constantly accelerating in recent days and is approaching, as he said, the record of the beginning of last summer. The target is 30 million vaccines by the end of the year and that is why there are enough vaccines, he assured.

Mr Wheeler said the country still had much to discuss about vaccination, but that “one thing is clear: if not everyone has protection, it will be very difficult to stop the pandemic.” .

Today, the Robert Koch Institute included Switzerland, Poland, Mauritius, Liechtenstein and Jordan in the “high risk areas”. Those who arrive in Germany from these countries and are not vaccinated or sick should remain in quarantine. Instead, Thailand, Uzbekistan, St. Vincent and the Grenadines were removed from the list.

Meanwhile, today the German Language Society announced that the word of the year for 2021 is “breakwater”, but with reference to the pandemic and its current fourth wave.
