Angela Merkel will visit the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate after biblical catastrophe caused by deadly floods, leaving at least 103 dead.
The German Chancellor held a video conference with Armin Lasset, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, who was also in epicenter of the disaster, to be briefed on search and rescue operations, a government spokeswoman said.
The first channel of the German public television ARD broadcast that Merkel will visit Suld on Sunday, one of the most affected cities.
“The federal chancellor is in talks with local governments for a first visit to the affected areas,” government spokesman Stephen Seibert told reporters yesterday.
Merkel also spoke with Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Malou Dreier, who briefed her on the situation in the region and ongoing rescue operations. The chancellor pledged support to local authorities.
