The number of new coronavirus cases in the last 7 days in Germany broke a record for the 4th consecutive day, reaching an average of 1,585.4 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the Robert Koch Institute, the country’s epidemiological surveillance body.
Earlier today it reported 198,888 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 in Germany, about 42,000 more than at the end of last week.
The deaths of 283 patients due to complications of COVID-19 increased the death toll in the country to 125,873, according to the same source.
According to health authorities, 2,297 patients are being treated in intensive care units, 36 more than yesterday Monday, but significantly less than at the time when the coronavirus Delta variant was predominant.
The vaccination program in Germany shows a slowdown, with 605,000 vaccinations against Covid-19 last week. According to official figures, at least 48.1 million people have been vaccinated with the so-called booster dose, while the unvaccinated amount to 19.6 million.
Vaccination against Covid-19 is mandatory for health workers and nursing home staff as of Wednesday. Under the new rules, employees are required to present a vaccination or disease certificate or a doctor’s certificate that they cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.
The Federal Association of Private Social Service Providers warned that the measure could exacerbate the already serious staff shortages in the healthcare sector.
