Germany: New tax reliefs for the victims of the pandemic announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner has promised more than 30 billion euros in relief for citizens and companies in the coming years.

“The 2022 budget is still being shaped by the previous government, but my plan for 2023 will be a relief,” the FDP leader told Bild am Sonntag.

For example, pension contributions from the tax could be completely abolished. The charge on the price of electricity could also be removed.

“In this legislative period we will relieve people and medium-sized businesses by more than 30 billion euros,” Lindner said.

Asked about companies affected by the coronavirus crisis, he announced a “coronavirus tax law”.

“It will provide for or extend existing support measures,” he said.

For example, losses in 2022 and 2023 should be offset by gains from previous years.

“No one should be ruined by tax debts during a pandemic.”

Lindner urged other government ministers to be sparing.

“The margin is narrow in 2022.” He called on his colleagues in the cabinet to “prioritize their projects and put previous expenditures to the test”.

The debt brake should apply from 2023, he noted. “So only the prosperity that was previously created can be distributed.”
