Germany: North Rhine-Westphalia PM apologizes for laughter

North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Armin Lasset apologized on Twitter for his laughter recorded on camera as Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his grief over the loss of human lives and the devastation in wider West Germany.

“I thank the Federal President for his visit. The fate of the afflicted touches our hearts (…). I am equally sorry for the impression created through a conversation. That was inappropriate and I’m sorry“, Wrote the candidate for Chancellor of the Christian Union (CDU / CSU).

Earlier, Mr. Lassett had been harshly criticized for his behavior by both the press and social media users, as well as his political opponents.

“I’m really stupid,” said Social Democratic Party (SPD) General Secretary Lars Klingbail, while SPD Vice President Kevin Kunert said it was “a matter of character.” However, the Liberals (FDP) also criticized the parliamentary group’s vice-president Michael Torerer, telling BILD on Sunday that the otherwise “honorable and happy” Armin Lassett does not seem to understand the seriousness of the situation, “as a fool while the President thinks of the victims “.
