Germany: Nuclear plants may have to stay in operation longer

According to the Federal Grid Agency, German nuclear power plants may need to remain in operation longer because of the looming power shortage in Europe.

“The current stress tests are about whether our nuclear plants should stay on the grid longer to meet the electricity needs here and in Europe in the winter,” Klaus Müller, the authority’s president, told the newspaper. Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (NOZ). “This is currently being calculated very thoroughly by transmission network operators.”

Right now, “too much natural gas is being used to generate electricity in Germany, mainly to help France, because not enough electricity can be generated there because of the problems with the nuclear plants there,” Müller explained. Nuclear energy “could not help to meet the shortage of natural gas in Germany, because we need natural gas as a basic material in the chemical industry and for the combined production of heat and electricity, i.e. for heating. Nuclear energy cannot replace neither”.
