Germany: Police on alert for May Day rallies

Thousands of police officers in Germany is currently on alert in anticipation of May Day rallies across the country, as authorities estimate that there may be violent incidents at demonstrations planned by members of left and right organizations.

While the DGB trade union confederation is holding its main rally in Hamburg under the slogan “Solidarity is the Future”, interest is turning to other demonstrations where violent incidents are likely to break out. More than 5,000 police officers will be on the streets of Berlin, where in the past Labor Day rallies were marred by violence, especially at night.

This year, in addition to the usual rallies, protesters against coronavirus restrictions are expected in the streets, many of whom belong to the far right. The Berlin authorities expect that 10,000 people will participate in a march of leftist organizations starting at 6 pm (19.00 Greek time). The situation is complicated by the night traffic ban imposed as part of the pandemic measures, as well as the demonstration planned for the afternoon by the Querdenken organization, which is contrary to the government’s strategy for the pandemic.
