The German government decided today that rail transport will henceforth be given priority for transporting materials and equipment used for energy production, should the water level in the Rhine fall further.
“In order to ensure the supply, we also have to change the delivery routes. This requires very demanding procedures and obliges us to prioritize these needs also in terms of rail travel,” said Economy Minister Robert Hambeck and clarified that the regulation will be valid for six months, during the winter and the increased consumption of natural gas.
Deutsche Bahn (DB) is already making the necessary adjustments, noted Transport Minister Volker Vissing.
The water level of the Rhine rose after the latest rains, but is expected to fall again as another dry season is forecast.
