Germany: Protests against the restrictive measures in Kassel

Clashes broke out today between police and protesters protesting against the pandemic in Kassel, in central Germany, in one of the largest rallies organized since the beginning of the year in the country.

A local police spokesman said 15-20,000 people had taken part in the protest.

The riots began when protesters gathered in Friedrichsplatz Square, without protective masks and without keeping their distance, tried to break the police cordon to join another group of protesters. Security forces tried to disperse the crowd using pepper spray, a French news agency reporter said.

In other areas of the city, the police made use of their batons and fired water under pressure against demonstrators who tried to break the cordon and were throwing bottles against them.

Clashes also broke out with protesters as protesters marched on the streets of Kassel, where they were allowed to gather.

The police blamed the assembled for “repeated attacks” against workers in the emergency services. “We will not tolerate such attacks,” said the authorities, who broke up the rally in Friedrichsplatz prematurely because health regulations were not being followed.

This mobilization was organized by the Querdenker (“Anti-conformist”) movement, which since the beginning of the pandemic has held many large demonstrations against the measures in Germany. It gathers a diverse crowd of far-left, far-right, anti-vaccine and conspiracy theorists. In Kassel, some protesters held placards with the slogans “End the quarantine” and “Corona Rebels”.

Meanwhile, police broke up a small gathering of 150 people at the Brandenburg Gate, in the heart of Berlin, because the regulations are not observed, as transmits the Sputnik agency quoted local police.
