Germany: Reactions to Bundestag decision not to allow debate on Ukraine after Zelensky

The decision of the Federal Parliament not to allow a debate on the war in Ukraine after the speech of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a teleconference, but to impose a direct return to the for compulsory vaccination against Covid-19.

“I thank President Zelensky for his eloquent speech today in the Bundestag. We see Russia continuing its fierce war every day, with horrific losses. , said Chancellor Olaf Soltz in a post on Twitter, immediately after the speech of the Ukrainian president in the Bundestag. Mr Zelensky had previously blamed Germany for oligarchy and over-indulgence in the economy, and closed his speech by calling on the German chancellor to “break down this wall” that Russia is building “between freedom and non-freedom”.

Following the intervention of Volodymyr Zelensky, the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU / CSU), Friedrich Mertz, called for a debate on Ukraine, which was refused by the presidency. “This is a good time for a first assessment of Germany’s actions in the conflict in Ukraine,” said Mr Mertz. “Today was the most indecent moment of the Bundestag that I have personally experienced,” wrote CDU foreign policy spokesman Norbert Rγκtgen, with many German media outlets posting in English “sorry for the negative image”.

“I am ashamed of my country,” Paul Ronzheimer, the newspaper’s correspondent in Kyiv, told BILD, noting that the Bundestag’s stance showed a lack of respect for the president of a country at war. “I am ashamed of my country, which after such an emotional speech, after a desperate call for help from an entire country, we move seriously to the German agenda and discuss the coronavirus. It is representative of how our politicians listened to what was happening in “Ukraine for eight years, but they did not react”, the journalist wrote and referred to the chair of today’s sitting, Bundestag vice-president Catherine Goering-Eckart, who even after the speech of the Ukrainian president read some wishes for the birthday of deputies. “Birthday wishes are on the agenda of the German Parliament. In Ukraine, death is on the agenda. I hope Volodymyr Zelensky had closed his connection,” the BILD envoy wrote.
