The reactivation of the coal-fired power plants and the simultaneous shutdown of the gas-fired power plants are planned in case of emergency by the Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy Robert Hubeck.
The relevant legislation, in force until the end of March 2024, provides for various measures in case of “gas shortage”, including the extension for six months of operation of coal-fired power plants.
In this case, gas-fired power plants will be shut down as highly unprofitable and in order to maintain gas reserves to be used for other purposes.
The regulation concerns 2.1 GW power plants which were to close in October and another 0.5 GW power plants that would close in 2023. Germany’s dependence on Russian gas currently reaches 35%, but is expected to be significantly reduced to at the end of the year, with the operation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.
However, according to Mr. Habeck, the government’s plan for phasing out coal by 2030 should not be affected. “It must be completed normally, by 2030. This is more important than ever in the current crisis,” he said.
