Germany: Record solar output as heatwave hits Western Europe

Germany generated a record amount of electricity from solar power on Sunday and is set to surpass it again on Tuesday as a heat wave hits Europe, Bloomberg reports.

About 38,174 megawatts were produced by solar on Sunday and high levels are expected through Wednesday. A new record is likely to be set on Tuesday, as production is forecast at 38,287 megawatts.

An intense heat wave is hitting western Europe, causing very high temperatures in many areas. Temperatures will peak on Tuesday and Wednesday in Germany as the heat begins to ease elsewhere, according to state forecast service DWD. Extreme temperatures are fueling fires in Spain, France and Greece, the report notes.

“Historical heat is forecast to prevail in parts of western Europe this week, where all-time high temperatures could be recorded,” Maxar Technologies said in a report.

The UK could see its hottest temperatures on record, with London forecast to reach 38.5C on Monday and 40C on Tuesday. In Nantes, France, the temperature will reach 42 degrees Celsius on Monday, also a new record. Paris will see 39 degrees Celsius on Monday and 40 degrees on Tuesday, according to Maxar.

The price of German energy rose to 397.09 euros per megawatt hour, the highest level since March. Electricity supplies are tight as warm air reduces wind output, leaving solar power to fill the gap.

Also, France’s nuclear fleet has been reduced as river temperatures warm beyond the allowable levels for cooling. Some coal plants along the Rhine River in Germany can’t get fuel as the river level drops.
