Germany: Reduction of quarantine for workers in key sectors to 7 days is suggested by the government

Lifting the quarantine period to seven of the 14 days for special categories of workers was suggested to the Assembly of Health Ministers by the Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach.

According to his proposal, which was formulated in consultation with the Robert Koch Institute, if a health worker or in a key position, such as electricity supply, tested positive for coronavirus, he could end the negative molecular diagnostic test. quarantine after the seventh day. People who have come into contact with a case should be able to end the quarantine after five days. Mr Lauterbach justified the changes by pointing to the risk of significant staff shortages due to the widespread use of the Omicron variant and stressing that his proposals were based on scientific evidence.

In the general population, both infected and non-symptomatic individuals can be screened after seven days. If they are asymptomatic children, they can have a molecular or “quick” test after five days. After ten days, they can end the quarantine without a test. Those who have been vaccinated and with the booster dose do not need to be quarantined, as well as those who have completed their basic vaccination up to two months before.

Final decisions on the issue are expected to be made during Chancellor Olaf Solz’s meeting with the state prime ministers on Friday.
